When to test for your employees for drugs and alcohol

Alcohol and drug abuse in the workplace is a growing problem with recent studies showing that 76% of drug abusers are in employment. Regular drug or alcohol use by employees can be detrimental to company image and profits as it can lead to increased absenteeism, poor working relationships, theft, reduced productivity and damaging customer interactions. Managers have a duty to themselves, shareholders and employees to consider the cost to the business of drug and alcohol abuse. Drug and alcohol use in the workplace can pose a significant risk to the safety of not only those responsible but also their co-workers and clients. A drug abuser is four times more likely to be involved in a work related insurance claim and as an employer, even the use of vehicles by the sales team and management can cause sufficient liability under the Corporate Manslaughter Act 2008 or the Health and Safety (Offences) Act, not just the obvious bus, truck or fork lift drivers.

TFI drugs and alcohol testing offer:

  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Random testing for drugs and alcohol
  • Routine testing
  • For cause testing
  • Post incident testing
  • Return to work employee screening/monitoring

The testing to be conducted will be determined by your drugs and alcohol policy.
We can provide both scientific and legal expert advice to assist in the development of a comprehensive and effective workplace policy. The requirements of each workplace will differ and your programme will be tailored to provide a service which considers both your testing needs and available budget.
